New Years Day Run 2012.

Sunday 1st January 2012 there is a run from Smithy Hill in Thornton Hough to the Pollards Inn, Willaston. It is about 4 miles . It starts at 11:30am and there is a voluntary contribution to a local charity. It is marshaled and timed with the winning man and lady getting a prize. After the race it is in the Pollards Inn for refreshments and social plus a raffle.

You can either park in Willaston and run to the start or leave your car in Willaston and get a lift to the start. There are always cars going back.

It is a good way to "blow away the cobwebs and excesses of the holiday"

If you can't run come along and support.

Hopefully see you there.

Winter Handicap on 27th December

Many thanks to all who came and took part in the Winter handicap on 27/12/11 in the best running weather anyone could ask for. In all 19 club members and one guest took part with Pete Edwards winning legally.. Pete Edwards was presented his ward by Walter Smith then Joe Johnson collected the fastest time award.

Afterwards it was into Margarets sack for all those who put in and the London marathon draw, with the two winners being John Rimmer and Debs Gardner. So the training gets started.

Thank you to Norman for time keeping as everyone ran this year.

Thanks

Andy

Mobile Phones

A while back I e-mailed you all about carrying mobile phones with you whilst out running.

Last Sunday was the first time I hadn't carried mine for a while and yes you've guessed it an emergency arose at home. Thankfully Jean knew which route I was taking an rang Marj, my sister-in-law, and she came to collect me. My 2 year old grand daughter Daisy had to go in to hospital because of an asthma attack. Thankfully she was home early evening and is recovering albeit slowly. Just as well Marj knew where to look.

I will certainly carry my mobile phone when out running and ask you all to give thoughts to doing the same. You never know when....

Take care.

Christmas Handicap

This takes place next Tuesday 27th December 2011. It starts in Maryland Lane, Moreton.

Maryland Lane, from Moreton Cross towards the sea, is the road which has the large church on the corner.

The race starts at 12noon and all runners set off at their handicap time and it is hoped all finish in a line. Never happened yet but we are getting closer to it. Chairman Andy Waring sets the handicap time for each runner for the distance, which is about 2 and half miles.

Andy needs to know if you are coming along.

Afterwards there is a draw from Margarets sack. If you put a present in you can take one out at the end in order of finishers.
There is also a draw for the London Marathon . The club has 2 allocated places. Don't forget closing date for this is 23:59hrs on Monday 26th December.

Afterwards it is back to the Caernarvon Castle Pub on Bidston Road for a social and a fun quiz. Questions set by Jim and Pete Edwards.

Hopefully see you there.

Dear Club,

As England Athletics build towards our new strategy 2013-2017 (and bid for funding to Sport England) it is important we understand your needs and where you would like to see further support going. You may feel you would like to see further investment into networks, maybe an extension of Local Coach Development Programme or Run England. Possibly you have some innovative suggestions to how delivery could be shaped going forward. Your views are essential to shaping our strategy for the sport. To help you provide us your feedback and suggestions, England Athletics have launched a range of surveys. This is your chance to have your voice heard!!

Details on the survey can be viewed at http://www.englandathletics.org/2011-survey
Addresses for each are as follows:

• Club Volunteer: www.englandathletics.org/Volunteer-Survey-2011

Orange Runners Club - Australia

As you are all aware, a new category has been added to our Club Awards. The Over 55's Award will go to a runner from one of our Sunday runs, and done on a handicap basis, so that not necessarily the fastest runner gets it. This award was donated by Birkenhead Athletics Club and Jerry, who was recently in Australia, is presenting the plaque to Frank.

A big thanks must go to Birkenhead Athletics for their support and generosity.

Hi guys just a little report on today's New York Marathon

Sorry for the late e-mail..!!!
I was proudly wearing my Birkenhead vest today, and it was touch and go with the weather on if to wear warm gear too. As it turned out I'm glad I only wore my vest and shorts, as I got slightly sunburnt :0). The course was really tough, as some of you know. Undulating throughout, with many hills caused by the bridges to different boroughs. I Had a couple of mishaps, most noticeably my watch going haywire under the 1st bridge... Meaning I did not manage to stick to my "firm" slow start plan. I am happy to say I got through it with a time of 3hr 59min and 38secs...which I'm made up with.

Thanks to everyone at Birkenhead AC for the support and encouragement shown to me since I joined. Special thanks to my Marathon training buddies.

Highlights of the day. Finishing, finishing sub 4 (just), pizza to recover, and meeting many fabulous people.
Low points. Miles 19-26.2...especially the last two, the 4hr pace guy overtaking me at mile 24.5 (had to up rate of hobble), removing nipple plasters after the race (never pleasant), and not finding Jerry a marathon tie! :0)

Grand Rapids Half Marathon, USA - Race Report

Weather was again in the forefront because of the wind & showers on Saturday. It continued to rain overnight & was still drizzling when we left the hotel at 06.30. The wind had died though, yipee.
Shorts, long sleeved tech shirt (from GRM 2005) and gloves. Right choice. Rain stopped & the wind didn’t return, better still. Temperatures were nice in the low 50’s. Goal was to run around a 7.10, an improvement on the 7.21 two weeks ago.. Mission accomplished with a 7.09 pace. 1.33.44 official, 2nd/47 in age group. 54/662 males and 62/1709 overall, age grade 75.3%. Very well run race lots of water stops, well signed, I didn’t miss a mile marker and a nice balance of urban, rural, forest preserve, road & asphalt trail. Even some small hills for good measure. This was the 8th annual Race and my 4th time. Splits were a bit over the place but I’ll take it! My calf has been taped up and some small heel lifts put in my shoes for a week now. These really worked and I didn’t feel the leg at all, no issues. Wonderful!

1 mile 6.54 total running time 6.54
2 mile 7.17 total running time 14.12
3 mile 6.46 total running time 20.59
4 mile 7.00 total running time 28.00
5 mile 7.03 total running time 35.04
6 mile 7.13 total running time 42.17
7 mile 7.13 total running time 49.31
8 mile 7.20 total running time 56.51
9 mile 6.54 total running time 1.03.46
10 mile 7.15 total running time 1.11.01
11 mile 7.27 total running time 1.18.28
12 mile 7.23 total running time 1.25.51
13 mile 7.11 total running time 1.33.03
13.1 mile 0.44 total running time 1.33.47

1.33.44 official finish time

Joe Arnold did well coming in at 2.00.32 for 2nd in his ag and 664/1709 overall, Age Grade was 70.5%. We had a good trip. Just us two this time.

Liverpool Marathon Race Report

The race started an hour late, 10:30 everyone was scurrying back and forth from the toilets! It was quite warm for here about 17 but windy when we got along New Brighton and Seacombe promenade. Ran through the Birkenhead Tunnel over a mile long, to Liverpool, awful, Kath was feeling it, so was I. Believe it or not, I told Kath I could not go on after 15 and half and pulled out. You can imagine I only pulled out, because basically I was knackered, and feeling the heat. The first marathon I have ever pulled out of! Kath did 4.25 and eight other of our runners ran.

I am slightly depressed about this, but basically, I did not have the stamina, a number of long runs I did, but due to the injury not enough short ones. I stayed at the end for Kath, because later on it suddenly became rainy, windy and cold, so she could get through the finish line and kit pick up quick.

Kind Regards,

Jerry

News from OZ

Irene and I are now back from Staying with my Auntie Hazel in Sydney. We also had a wonderful two days with Karen and Wayne Neal and their son Sam. Orange is a four hour coach trip from Sydney, very much in the country, and it was wonderful to see Kangaroos and Ekidnas in the wild for the first time.

We presented the plaque to the club at a social evening held for us. The plaque is being used for the over 50s in the club. The Run the Bridge Half Marathon was run in 30 degrees, Karen and I had a difficult time. Special thanks to Karen for running in a Birkenhead A.C. vest, I felt at home! Wayne commented over 400 people pulled out with heat exhaustion.

The hospitality Irene and received was wonderful, and I hope this cements the already close links we have with Orange Runners. Bill and Jane Fairgreave from Orange Runners and due at the moment in the U.K. for a year and will be coming to see us. I am sure we can return the kindness we have received.

I will give a longer report in Norman’s quarterly newsletter.

Kind Regards,

Jerry

Hellrunner Race Report

Just a quick update about Sunday's run. The weather on Sunday was cloudy, but a good temperature to run in. Around 800 people turned up to race, so It was a large crowd. The race was fantastic, 11.8miles of hills, woods and mud. There were some sights to behold, in particular one guy did the race in a borat mankinie...which running behind for three miles was less than pleasant lol.

I paced well throughout and finished 122 out of around 800. 1hr 52mins. I managed to beat my friend from ellesmere port runners...but he did do it with a ironing board strapped to his back haha!!!

Many Thanks
Adam

This Sunday is the Wirral AC Mile Relay

Following on from an e-mail sent in August this Sunday is the Wirral AC mile relay at the Bebington Oval. Several runners have indicated they will run and represent BAC in this event but we would like a good few more please. Club colours must be worn as it will help the organisers see who is there.

Can you come along to the Oval to run 4 laps of the track? It is not a race but a relaxed run or as relaxed as you want. It would be our way of helping Wirral start their centenary celebrations. It starts at 11am on Sunday 11th September.

Please let me know either way.

Many thanks.

Visit To Our Friends In Orange New South Wales

I am off to Australia on September 11th my birthday! This is to visit My Auntie Hazel, my mum’s sister. I will not mention my age!

This should be a memorable trip for a number of reasons. In 2008 I ran the Sydney Run the Bridge Half Marathon with Karen Neal from Orange Runners New South Wales, I have also been in touch with many of Karen’s running friends including Bill and Jane Fairgreave senior members of the club and originally from Jedburgh on the Scottish Borders. They are just retiring and coming over to the U.K. for a year and will be coming to see us.

Many of our members have been in touch with the runners from Orange with our connections shown on both of our websites. I am staying in Orange for two days I have a Civic Letter and other items from the Mayor of Wirral and we are presenting a “Birkenhead Shield Handicap Plaque” from BAC.

I am running the Run the Bridge with Karen and other members from Orange. Then I am back for the Liverpool Marathon in early October. It has been a pleasure running the marathon distances, but hard work as usual, thanks to Super Kath, Adam, Dave and Micha who have been keeping me company on the long distances.

Best wishes to Lawrie, Andy and Super Kath doing the Vyrnwy Half Marathon on the 11th September.

Kind Regards,
Jerry.

Mahomet Half Marathon, USA - Saturday 8/20

Cool temperatures, mid 60’s, for August but still humid. No wind, luckily the sun was behind high clouds for most of the time. Flat fast course out in the corn fields. A well run race with plenty of water & volunteers. Only about 5 gently rolling hills and two of them were bridges over the Interstate. This was a revenge race.

When I last did it in 2009 I ran a 1.29.29 but only managed 4th place in AG ( & 27th overall/333). This year I managed a 1.33.47 for 1st/10 in Age group. The second placed guy in my AG was 5 minutes behind me and we both beat all the 50 year old males……..what a difference a year (or 2) makes! I was 35/290 overall with a 7.09 pace.

No splits on this one as I found my watch battery had died when I went to put it on just before the race. I know the first 4 miles were sub 7m pace and around mid race I was running 7.15’s. I guess I didn’t slow up too much. Quads were still sore on Monday.

Wirral AC Centenary

Wirral AC celebrate their Centenary this year and are holding an event at The Oval. They have invited us to join in with their Mile relay. It is a team of 25 runners each running one mile. There is no cost involved.

I emailed their Secretary to say we wouldn't be able to raise 25 runners for the event. He replied saying bring as many runners as we could and some runners could double up if they want to.

With this in mind I am therefore asking you to let me know if you can participate. It is on Sunday 11th September starting at 11am. The team can comprise onf men and lady runners.

Hope you can help

MALTA 2012 - Update

Hi Norman,

I believe that the attached documents (Registration Info and Map Elevations) are exactly what you need.

The first one is a detailed map of the Finish area in Sliema with important points to the Malta Marathon and the second one is a map of Marathon and Half Marathon which both start in Mdina and finish in Sliema. The full starts at 0800 and the Half at 1000, we also have a walk that covers the half marathon route which starts at 0900 and still forms part of the HM. Participants of the walk may also jog or run at any time, this event give the chance for people who think that they cannot run a HM to participate. We have found a number of participants moving up to the HM after having tried the walk.

Since you will be a large group it would be best that you don't register through our website but directly with me. This way I will be able to give you consecutive race numbers and will therefore be able to prepare all of your registration stuff (numbers, pins, timing chips, magazines, cloths bags and T-shirts) for them to be picked up all together.
This will save your group from having to queue up.

All I would need to know is the progress in the number of participants from time to time. Closer to the date, say in January I will ask you to send me the main details of each participants and I will input them myself.
Payment for the entries can then be done once the number of participants has been finalised.

If you are interested we also offer transport to the start at £4.00 per person. Transport leaves the finish at 06:30 for the FM and 08:30 for the HM.

Having accommodation close by the finish is a good idea as everything related to the marathon will be within walking distance, participants can even walk back at their leisure after the event.

I would appreciate it if you give me your next update in early October.

If you have any other questions just ask.

Regards,

Joe Micallef
(Malta Marathon Race Director)

MALTA 2012

I will require, soon, the names of you who intend going to Malta for the Half Marathon there in February 2012. I will also require which nights you will want to be staying and single or twin room. I need all this information so that I can book the Hotel, as yet unknown.

You can now book Easyjet flights from Manchester so the sooner you do this the cheaper it will be.

The trip isn't just for runners and all are welcome.

Please let me know as soon as possible please and I will try and get a Hotel as near to the finish as possible.

Midnight Sunday 14th August 2011 will be the latest I will be taking bookings for the Hotel after that I am sorry to say that I will be unable to guarantee the Hotel. I am sure you will understand this.

Please also make sure that your passport will have more than 6 months to run from February 2012 as airlines can stop people travelling.

Many thanks

(Viking) Summer Sunset 5km, Geneva, 27th July

This was my ‘comeback’ form finding race last year after a 4 month injury so I thought it only right to celebrate the year with a repeat.

Hot & Humid again, though there was a breeze and the sun became cloud covered just before the start, which was helpful.

Different course this year, mostly on footpaths in the country which was nice for running on but not so nice for racing. I didn’t get a clean ‘road’ until after mile 1 so further to the back of the pack would have been worse. Though the race is billed as a family event the 5km has a bit of a clique following, like Cary March Madness, & a competitive field, so this course wouldn’t suit those types. Overall rolling with a gradual downhill for the first half, a noticeable rise for about half a mile and then a gradual fall to flat for the finish. Ran 20.43 for 2nd/13 in Ag and 71/542 overall. 6.41 pace. This was a nice improvement on the 21.47 and 5th/18 in ag and 100th/523 last year. So it’s fair to say progress has been made. Nice Pizza afterwards, just not enough of it to feed the later arrivals.

Splits – 6.25, 6.43, 6.52, 0.41 for a 20.43 total (20.41 official), not the greatest of splits but the drop off from 2 to 3 was ½ the drop between 1 & 2, so I’ll take that.
(Last year was 7.01, 6.53, 7.11, 0.43 for a 21.47 overall.)

Next up Mahomet, IL a 1/2m on August 20th.

CLUB SUMMER RUN

The last Club summer run, this year, is next Tuesday 2nd August 2011. It starts at 7pm prompt from the Cottage Loaf car park.

It will be great to see you all there in your club vests. The run is about 5 miles long and is a slowish run with stopping places so all can catch up (mainly me).

Come along and support your Clubs event.

Take care.

Chester Half Marathon

We just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and let you know about the exciting plans we have for the Chester Half Marathon 2012. We're both keen runners, and we will be working with West Cheshire Athletic Club to make sure this race remains a firm favourite on the calender.

We are planning a new route on closed roads which will give this very popular race the opportunity to grow; again taking in local villages around Chester and finishing in the City Centre. You'll be the first to know about the new route, and of course as soon as entries are open. As you've run the race in the past couple of years it would be great if you could let us know what you enjoyed about it, and what we could make even better.

As you'll know, we organise the Chester Marathon on 9th October and our race team are working hard to make sure it will be a great race for the runners. Entries are flooding in, and we wanted to make sure that you got the opportunity to enter before we fill up. If you don't want to race then why not lend a hand or come along and watch, it would be great to see you.

Good times!

University of Okoboji, Iowa, USA - Half Marathon Race Report - July 16th 2011

Hot & Humid, as in very hot & humid. Around 80F at the start. The 08.00 start time did not help. Only about 30-40% shade, but some wind which was nice. Though it was ¾ of the way around a lake I wouldn’t describe it as flat. No hills but gentle rolls I guess is the best description. Lots of pretty properties to look at with glimpses of the lake between them. Waterstops were every couple of miles & were certainly needed.

A strange race. The marathon, 1/2m, 10km and triathlon all finished in the same place. The 1/2m was a point to point, being the 2nd half of the marathon course, but while they had mile markers (painted numbers in the road) we did not, so no splits for this race………Even the solitary clock at the end was reading 9 hours something when I crossed, presumably it was set to the Triathlon event or something? I set off at a decent clip but slowed as the heat & humidity got to me. I finished 30 /217 overall but was overtaken by about 10 including the winner of my age group. It was kind of nice at the beginning, overtaking marathoners (they started at 6am) & then later on I was being overtaken by theTri guys. At least the bib numbers were different colours so you could tell. Time at 1.42.13 was way off the usual but enough for 2/14 in AG. The age groups were in 10 yr increments so in mine it was a 50yr old first, in 1.40 and change, then me at 55 and then the 3rd place guy, who was 59, came in 1.45 something.

Most impressive was being just beaten by a 56yr old woman, that’s one fast lady.

My pace was 7.58. State number 23 done.

By the Way there is no ‘University of Okoboji’, it’s made up. Nice lake though.

Club's Next Overseas Half Marathon!

It has been decided that the next overseas half marathon, by Birkenhead AC, will be in Malta. The race is on Sunday 26th February 2012 and has a time limit of 3 hours. The race starts at 10am in Mdina and finishes in Sliema. There are organised buses to the start plus baggage buses.

All the information on the race can be found on www.maltamarathon.com

What is required now is confirmation from people interested in going. Procedure is you book your flights and I will book the hotel, ideally on bed and breakfast basis. You then let me know how many nights and whether a twin or single room.

Obviously the earlier I know of your intentions the sooner the hotel can be booked.

Should you require any further information please let me know.

Take care

Borders League

BAC have been accepted in to the Borders League. It is a series of 7 road races of varying distances, not in competition with the Cross Country.
The following will explain all.

Borders League 2011/2012

On July 4th 2011 Andy W, Norman and Joe attended the Borders AGM to put our case forward to joining the league from 2011-2012 season of runs. After waiting for all the other items to be sorted I am pleased to say the club was accepted.

A cheque £50 has been sent off for our fees. A few things came to light. Venues will be promoted early as they are never the same in some cases and marshals are to be treated respectfully as always. A concern was raised about parking at some and we will try our best to car share. With these being Winter races/distance away from BAC/fuel/races likely to be cancelled late we should meet at Thornton road before setting off. Club colours to be worn in all races and a £1 levy for all competitors to be paid to Joe or nominated person.

Dates of races - these may clash with other events on the same weekends - it can’t be helped

Sun 16th October Prestatyn
Sun 13th November Wallasey
Sun 11th December Tattenhall
Sun 8th January Abergele
Sun 26th February Wrecsam Tri
Sun 11th March Helsby
Sun 1st April Chester Tri (Spare date)
Wed 25th April Dee Striders (Prize giving)
All are 11am start with the night race being 1900hrs??

Teams to count are 7 in a male and 3 in female, 5th race is cut off for prizes, Joe will explain.

Lets prove we can join in and not be bottom!!!!!!!

Norman, Andy and Joe

3rd Summer Club Run

This coming Thursday, 7th July is the 3rd Summer Club Run. It is from the Irby Mill Pub and will start at 7pm prompt. The run is about 5 miles, not fast with several rest/catch up stops.

Afterwards it is back to the Irby Mill for refreshments. The Irby Mill has a good selection of snacks and meals for those who will have worked up a thirst or hunger

There is a small car park so if you can car share it will be a great help.

Please wear club colours.

Hopefully see you there.

Take care.

Norman
Hon Secretary

Hi,

Our annual Race for Life event is at Birkenhead Park on 10th July, starting at 11am. This year, we're low on volunteers and are hoping you may be able to help as I notice your athletics club is local. We require 10 marshalls to help direct the participants around the course.

All our volunteers receive free refreshments, as well as a briefing, radio control and marshall bib. We estimate that the course will be completed in less than 2 hours, so we ask for 2-3 hours of your time.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you're able to help.

Thanks very much in advance,

Claire

Sunday 3rd July

Two things to note for this Sunday 3rd July 2011.

Firstly it is the Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride and if the route is the same as previous years then the Causeway will be busy.
Secondly because of the bike ride the Birkenhead Tunnel will be closed, so those running the Penny Lane 10k will have to use the Wallasey Tunnel.

If you are participating in either event Good Luck and enjoy.

Club's Summer Handicap

Many thanks to all who took part and supported the Summer handicap on the rain soaked evening of 24th June, will we ever have the sun shining!!!!

Thanks go to Rob/Emer for the excellent time keeping and photos (we'll see them soon) to Justine/Lorna for ensuring we had cars at the finish and not forgetting Gary for keeping all our kit dry, not an easy task. Once the line up photo was took Norman set off at a blistering pace and it seemed a life time before Maureen/Maria/Lawrie/Ian S/Jim/Dave/Adam/Andy/Simon/Patrik followed off creating a line of orange vests on the sea front.

A first handicap for Dave/Adam/Simon and I'm sure if asked they set off too fast. As the results tell you Patrik the rocket flew pass everyone to win both the handicap and the fastest time. After the final photos and presentation it was off home for some while others enjoyed the comforts of the Derby Pool. It was then the wait for the table/meal however when it was served silence was found at last before we retreated to a warm shower.

Thanks again for supporting the club events.

Club "Summer" Handicap

This Friday 24th June is the Club "Summer" handicap. It is the same course all but about 20 yards as the Seaside run. It starts at 7pm PROMPT.

Meet in the slip road to Moreton Shore. It is a run down to the Derby Pool then if car is at the start a jog back. The object is that all runners leave at their Handicap time (sorted by Andy Waring) and hopefully finish in a line. It is competitive, and there are prizes for fastest and first past the post.

Downers Grove 10 miler, USA ~ Race Report ~ Sunday 12th June 2011

Beautiful sunny day with a bit of wind but great temperatures & lowish humidity.

1.09.07 for a 6.55 pace. 1st/11 in Ag (comfortably as second place was 4 min behind) and 24th /183 overall. Small turnout this year, the 34th annual. They had a bit of a timing snafu with some 5 milers entered as 10 milers and some 10 milers including me entered in the 5 mile race. So my results slip showed a 13.51 pace…..& I saw a couple of 5 milers who had 3.58 and 4.02 paces………….oops. So the results have only just gone on line. It felt a whole lot better than the Elgin 10, I think just because of the weather. Now for a rest, next up is a 1/2m in Iowa July 16th.

The reason for the mile 4-6 speed up is because I was caught by a couple of 23 year old guys running a very nice pace and for a few miles there were 4 of us running together & talking a bit, which was nice. They pulled away at 7m and finished 2min 20 secs ahead of me. They told me afterwards they planned on running the second lap faster than the first, I should have known something was up when mile 6 turned out to be a 6.30!!

1 mile 6.40 total running time 6.40
2 mile 7.03 total running time 13.43
3 mile 7.01 total running time 20.45
4 mile 6.46 total running time 27.31
5 mile 6.43 total running time 34.15
6 mile 6.30 total running time 40.45
7 mile 7.09 total running time 47.55
8 mile 7.17 total running time 55.13
9 mile 7.05 total running time 1.02.18
10 mile 6.51 total running time
1.09.09 (official time 1.09.07)

Mobile Phones!

A really sad incident happened over the weekend and it brought home to me of the importance of mobile phones when out running, etc.

A neighbour of mine, who used to run with Capenhurst, collapsed on Sunday whilst out with a group who were walking in the Yorkshire Dales. Unfortunately he passed away, aged 53, but help was quickly summoned via a mobile phone.

As runners we should give very serious thought as to carrying a mobile phone whilst out running whether individually or in a group.Hopefully it will never be required but please consider taking one out with you.

You should also tell somebody your route and anticipated return time when running by yourself.

Sorry to be so sombre but sometimes it is the only way to get a message across.

Take care

Borders League Update!

At the AGM a request was made to put a team into the Borders League, this was put to a vote in which everyone was in favour.

Joe Johnson has been hard at work and gathered the information required and been in touch with the Borders secretary. At the AGM you asked the committee to decide - we have been together and gone over the facts. The outcome is that we are asking to join the Borders League, our fate will be decided at the Borders AGM on the 4th July in which the Chairman/Secretary and Joe will be attending.

More details will be passed on to the club after the Borders AGM, please watch out for this then fill up your diary.

Thurstaston Multi-Terrain Challenge on the 10th May

Many thanks to all who took part in the Thurstaston Multi-Terrain Challenge on the 10th May, seeing the Orange vests and all second claim members, new members complete the event showed how good the club is at present. A big thank you to all who helped marshal around the course safely directing the runners in the correct direction and giving encouragement. Overall I would say over half of the club was involved including having the organiser so well done to you all.

Many thanks

National Heritage Corridor 25km, USA ~ Race Review ~ Saturday 7th May 2011

It was a small race, only 98 finishers. Nice weather, bit of a headwind on the way back. A tale of two halfs, up to mile10 and after! The turnaround was at mile 8.5 and I was lying 10th. I kind of knew where I was with respect to the competition so didn’t have a lot of motivational push! Another weak excuse would be that I was not fully recovered from Louisville the week before.

Seaside Runs

Good evening all, my apologies for not mentioning the "Seaside Run" which takes place this Wednesday at Moreton Shore with a 7pm start. It is an A to B race of about 4.7 k and similar if you run back to Moreton for your car

Another good run is the "Run in the park 5k"which takes place every Saturday morning at Princes Park in Liverpool with a 9am start. I ran this yesterday and Andy Carragher ran it earlier in the series. I thoroughly recommend this race. It is well organised and well marshaled with a 2 lap run around the park, all on footpaths. The beauty of the early start is I was home for 10-15am in time for breakfast. I will certainly be running this again soon.

Take care.

Fargo ND Half Marathon, USA, Race Review & Splits - Saturday 21st May

An interesting race. First up a (I think) Brit master of ceremonies on the mike.
The Governor of ND showed up & said some words and so did the Mayor of Fargo. Then we had the CANADIAN National Anthem sung to us. Finally we had some Guitarist called Happy play the Star Spangled banner Jimi Hendrix style only louder & with more reverb…. I don think I’ll forget it in a hurry, and am now thinking of becoming Canadian……………!!!
The weather wanted its part of the action & started to sprinkle while we had a 10 minute delay. Luckily it passed & then held off until after I had finished. Despite being 62F it was very humid & I got pretty hot during the race. The wind helped even when it was a 20mph headwind…………….. Very flat course but that made every over & under pass ( there were a few) seem like a major hill. Pleasant course, loads of bands (way better than any RnR race I have done) & fantastic crowd support. Mile 1 was drinking wine straight from the bottle (well it looked like a Rose)……….the Bloody Mary’s were out (always with a celery stalk, you have to do these things properly you know!) and lots of beer. At least the spectators knew how to party.
There were 4 or 5 races over the weekend totaling some 22,000 runners. They started the marathon 1 hour before us & I just beat the winner home, not that that says much. All in all a good day & worth the trip. Time was a bit slow, but that might just be the new standard! At least my legs felt real good afterwards.

1.33.32 official time, 120/6155 overall, 2/133 in AG and 103/2383 males.

AGM Summary

Excellent turn-out. Thank You.

The same Officers and Committee were elected with Joe Johnson being added as the Off Road Secretary.

It has been decided that the Club will enter teams in the Merseyside and Northern Cross Country Championships plus a team in the Nationals.

We will also look at the possibility of entering teams in the Borders league. This is a Road Running League

We ask all of you when entering races to put the club name as Birkenhead AC. If this is followed it will save confusion when looking for results as happened at the Liverpool Half Marathon, when there were 7 variations of the club name.

It was agreed that for the London Marathon Club Ballot that those who were successful will have to wait 4 complete years before being allowed to enter the Ballot again, 4 year rule will stand for those who had the club places in 2010 and 2011 marathons.

Olympic Torch Bearers

A press release to day by the London Olympic Committee says they will be looking for 8,000 torch bearers. Each bearer will run one mile. You can get more information on this by logging on to www.london2012.com

Rather than being a club thing they seem to be looking for people to be nominated at the moment, whether running clubs become involved I don't know.

The torch is at Chester on the 29th May 2012 and Liverpool on the 1st June 2012. You can keep in touch with the London web-site but if I get any more information I will pass this on to you all.

Kentucky Derby Half Marathon, Kentucky, USA Race Review & Splits ~ Saturday 30yh April 2011

Perfect weather conditions. Low humidity, about 50F at the start. Not much wind. Sunny and about 60F at the finish.
Miles markers were off/ difficult to see so missed a couple. Perfectly flat course apart from a dip & rise under a railroad and going into & out of the Churchill Downs infield. The Churchill Downs were not that exciting, barely got a glimpse of the course.
Pretty course overall though, nice tree lined streets & the downtown area at the start & finish was neat. Went out too fast so took a pitstop at the second water stop in mile 4, caught my breath & restarted with a slightly slower crowd. Cost me about 30 seconds, but felt a lot more comfortable. 1.31.29 official time, 7th/373 in age group. 198th /11391 overall, 173rd / 4958 males. Pretty happy with the time and the 10km split was 43.20, which equates to a 15 second fade in the second ½ of the race, ( it would be closer to 45 sec if you take out the pitstop). Overall 6.59 pace. So a good one. My fastest 1/2m since September 2009 (though I did do a 1.31.50 in November 2010).

Message from Jerry

Can I thank all club members who sponsored me for our Birkenhead Shopmobility Battery Fund. We are heading for the £850, possibly hitting £900.

The Marathon was great, although I felt the heat going in for the last 8 miles. The crowds were great, so was the music. It was great to see Marg and Chris down there, and they stayed near to me at Kew. Special thanks also to Phil who ran with me for 17 miles.

Best Wishes,
Jerry.

AGM - Fri 20th May

The AGM of Birkenhead Athletic Club will take place on Friday 20th May 2011 at the Lairds Social Club, St. Peters Road, Rock Ferry. The meeting will start at 7-30pm in the upstairs Windsor Lounge. Please do your best to attend.

Any matters arising that you wish to put forward should be sent to me by Friday 4th May 2011

The Agenda will then be sent out shortly after that.

Many thanks,

London Marathon Race Review

HOla everyone!

Had a great day here in London! Chris , Andy and I have completed the marathon on a reasonably hot day with the biggest number of spectators the Marathon has seen!

I did a respectable 5 hours and for a woman with high blood pressure and 60 years of age I think it is fantastic.

Thank you very much for all your encouragement and sponsorship ( and if you havent sponsored me you can still do it on www.virginmoneygiving.com/MARGARETDELANEY )

Chris and I would like to bottle the feeling we have now and spray it on now and again!!

So now we are just settleing down to a few glasses of champagne and a chinese take away.

Love to you all and thanks again

Marg XXXX

Good Luck

Just to wish GOOD LUCK to all of you who are running the London Marathon this week-end. Hope the weather is kind to you.

Merit Award 2010-2011

Everyone should have recieved an email (sent 5th April) with a list of all Club members eligible to vote for the runner they think has made an important contribution to the Club during the past 12 months.

To vote either print off the form (attached to the email) and indicate the runner you are voting for and post to me or e-mail me your nominated runner. It is a secret ballot in that I will be the only person who knows who has voted and will not let anybody else know.

If you can't open the list please let me know and I will send you a copy.

All I ask is that you please vote. It is an important part of the running and history of the club.

Great Barrow Challenge

This will be a fantastic event and a serious challenge for all entrants and something I am sure many of your Running, Biking & Walking friends and colleagues will be very interested in.

Could I ask you please to distribute the web site address below to your group, mailing lists and to any other individuals you know who may be interested.

http://www.greatbarrowchallenge.co.uk/

Full and detailed information regarding understanding and entering the Great Barrow Challenge will be found at the link above and we look forward to your interest and your assistance.

To whet your appetite we feel you should know this event covers a range of Challenges, ranging from regular distance walks, runs and bicycle rides to very challenging longer distance versions of those disciplines, this is above and beyond most Sportive or Charity Challenge events and is rightly billed as a super Sportive or Challenge. Or for those who are not looking for such an intense challenge but still want to push themselves the lower distances are going to be just as much as a personal challenge, so we are catering for everyone.

If you are only able to do one Challenge, Event or Sportive this year, you should look into The Great Barrow Challenge, it could change your life.

Please feel free to contact me directly to ask any questions or if you would like some promotional media to display at an event or clubhouse to help us spread the word about The Great Barrow Challenge..

Thank you

James Heath.

Market Drayton 10k

As you probably know the Müller 10K was cancelled but has now been re-instated as Market Drayton 10k by a new committee in conjunction with Market Drayton running club. The date and venue are still the same though there has been a slight change to improve the course.

Apologies to those that have already been notified of this information, though it was easier to email all clubs / forums / anyone who can spread the word!

From some of the comments, people have expressed concern and disappointment that the event won't be as good or they won't receive the Müller yoghurts. However, though Müller are not organising the event they have still offered to provide yogurts.

There is a new web site for the event where you can view all the information / course details etc. http://www.marketdrayton10k.co.uk/

Web site is nearly complete and will includes entry forms for the main even and the fun run. We will also be offering pre-entries to the fun run.

This is the e-mail for any queries; marketdrayton10K@gmail.com

You can enter online on the following link; http://www.ukforms.net/onlineforms/php/Applicant.php?EventID=1068

or download an entry form from here; http://www.ukresults.net/forms/110508drayton.pdf

Please forward this e-mail to your club members, and as many runners as you can, to make this event a success.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank You!

Message from Jerry Williams r.e. his London Marathon Run

I am running London for our Shopmobility. During the year we receive many scooter donations from members of the public, however many have batteries that are no longer serviceable, so we have to replace those batteries. Each scooter has two batteries and they are expensive. Could You support me, we have a target of £700.

Kind Regards,

CANCELLATION NOTICE - WHITLEY 10K 3rd APRIL

Regrettably we had to make a decision at the end of last week to cancel this year’s 10k and Fun Run, as the cost of implementing recommendations made by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) is prohibitively expensive. The recommendations in question relate to closing to vehicular traffic, during the period of the race, the single track lanes we use. This would involve us employing a Traffic Management Company to erect closure and diversion signage and to supervise the closures on the day, at considerable cost to us.

UK Athletic’s insurers were asked to confirm insurance for the event (on the basis of arrangements we have had in place to cover safety risks for the past 28 years we have held our event), but declined to do so if the SAG recommendations were not followed. During that time we have not had a single safety incident, but evidently neither SAG nor the insurers felt this had any bearing on the matter.

Whether the same position will apply to us for future years will depend on how UKA are able to respond to the principle of closures/cost as this must apply to many races throughout the country especially in rural areas, and we are not the first race in Cheshire West to be cancelled as a result of SAG input. UKA are aware of the position and did what they could to try to persuade their insurers to cover us.

We are sorry you have been inconvenienced.

Clifford Straw for Whitley Village Hall Trustees. 15/03/2011

London Marathon Sponsorship

On 17th April 2011 I will be running the London Marathon with my oldest friend, Chris Champney, in memory of her son Guy who went to sleep on 11 August 2009 and, sadly, never woke up. Guy was a healthy, active young man whose heart simply stopped working at the age of just 34.

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently "fit and healthy" young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is a national charity saving young lives and supporting those affected. Therefore, I have pledged to raise £1750 to help CRY continue in its research and support.

To sponsor me please go to my fundraising website http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MARGARETDELANEY

This will be my fourth London Marathon and now that I am an old aged pensioner I thought that it might be fun! I have increased my training since January, in preparation for the big day, today Chris and I did 20 miles around the beautiful Wirral countryside and we're both feeling great....beats lying in bed on a Sunday morning!

I hope that I can count on your support for this fantastic charity. I will be running in my club colours (bright orange) so look out for me on the TV as I cross the line !!

Thank you for your support.

Marg

Presidents 5k - 1st April 11

FRIDAY 1ST APRIL 2011 is now the new date for the Presidents 5k track race at the Oval.

The 5k race will start at 6-30pm. Reason for the date change is that the track had been double booked a week later.

There will be no charge to run as the track has been booked by our club.

AFTERWARDS a table has been booked at the Chinese - DA-DA, 56-58 Bebington Road, New Ferry, just up from Runners Sports.
Parking is around the old bowling green on Boundary Road. The table has been booked for 8-30pm It has a fully licenced bar and a has available an Evening Buffet costing £8.50 which has been tested by the Waring clan and is well worth it. It would save waiting to order/await meals etc. All attending can you please let ANDY know via email Andytherunnerno1@talktalk.net or by phone (number is on the email sent 11th March) so he can give numbers for the table?

All trophies to be returned at the track ready for engraving including equaliser ones..

Look forward to seeing you

The Cow Town Marathon Race Rerview, Fort Worth, Texas, USA ~ Sunday 27 Feb

Tough conditions. Too hot @ 65F and humid, Ha! So much for a cool February race, yesterday would have been perfect! Lots of little hills, so not easy. At least it was cloudy.

Objective was to achieve a Boston Qualifier in the first wave, and I ran it that way. When they open up 2012 Boston registration on Sept 12, 2011 you have to have qualified 20 mins under your ‘par’ time to sign up, after 3 days those who were 10 mins under can sign up and so on. The result is most likely a par qualifying time will not get you in the race. I needed a 3.25 to get into the first wave.

Mission accomplished with 44 seconds to spare. Yippee! One of the toughest races I have done. 54th overall/1429. 48th/ 959 males. 1st in Age Group out of 54. Very Happy. My fastest marathon since Marine Corps in Oct 2007

Müller 10K Race Cancelled

It is with regret that we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel the Müller 10K Road Race 2011. Unfortunately, we cannot sustain the amount of staff time and resources involved in organising this event, which has grown way beyond our expectations.

Any entrants who have already submitted entries will have their entry fee returned. We apologise for the disappointment and any inconvenience caused by the cancellation of this event.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank to everyone who came down to make it such a memorable occasion over the last few years.

THE SHUTTLEWORTH 5 TRAIL RACE - Sunday 15th May 2011 @ 10.30am

Fancy having a go at running off-road? Perhaps you already love the feeling of being close to nature that comes with trail running and want to get back to it after pounding the pavements all winter?

The new Shuttleworth 5 is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of beginners and seasoned trail runners alike. On Sunday May 15 at 10.30am the Shuttleworth 5 offers a rare opportunity to run from the beautiful Old Mansion at Shuttleworth College, Old Warden, Biggleswade. The course passes through some of the most unspoilt countryside in the country and really offers the chance to get away from the rat race.

Leaving the college grounds you will pass through the tiny village of Old Warden into mature woodland and open fields before the majestic sight of the Old Mansion beckons you back to the finish. The course is undulating and follows public footpaths and ancient rights of way.

Included in the entry fee (£16 for affiliated runners, £17 for unaffiliated) is free car parking, finishers medal, changing, showers and reduced entry to the Shuttleworth Collection next door to the College, an ideal destination for a family day out. The Tavern on the college site offers food and drink and will be open on the day of the race.

Dirt Running will be raising money for The Shuttleworth Trust.

Enter online at www.runnersworld.co.uk or by post to;

ENJOY THE RACE!

Updated 21/1/ 2011 @ 21:00

The Farndon 10k Road Race on 6 March has been CANCELLED. Peter Norman says the West Cheshire SAG (Safety Advisory Group - paul.riley@cheshire.pnn.police.uk ) have insisted on road closures and the costs (£1225) are too high and can not be afforded at the current race entry fees.

Because the race starts on the Wirral I have volunteered and if you wish to do so there is a link on their web-site.

Message for Birkenhead AC:

On 18 December 4 members of the St. Luke's Men's Group (+ 1 dog!) completed the 14 miles run from Hooton along the "Wirral Way" footpath to West Kirby and onto Hoylake. The idea started as a plan to jointly run 50 miles, to mark the 50th birthday of one of the group!

On the evening before the run there was 4" of snow - which added to the challenge - but the trains were still running to Hooton and all the group completed the challenge in just under 2 hours!

They were sponsored by a few friends + "Runners Sports" & raised £100 for the charity Compassion.

This photo above shows the group before they set off: Dave, Matt, Noel & Nick (holding Benny) a BAC member.

Tuffnutz 2011

The date for Pensby Runners Tuffnutz is Sunday the 27th March, unfortunately it's the same date as the Liverpool Half and probably twice as much fun and twice as muddy!!!

For those not doing Liverpool, and interested in taking part, I am looking to put a team together, it'll be 3rd time lucky for me, particularly as I didn't get in to HellRunner 2011 as entries closed after less than 2 weeks!!!

Any volunteers......!!!!!??????*********** please get in touch.

Run to Read Half Marathon, Fairmont WV, USA ~ Race Review ~ Sunday 9th January 11

This was state #20 in the 1 x 1/2marathons in everyone of the 50 states quest. 1.39.14 official. 7.35 pace. 4/11 in AG, 52/248 overall.

Bright & sunny with little to no wind, about 25F ie perfect conditions. Nice course. Out & back for 4m on an asphalt paved old rail track in the woods, a drop down to another rail road track, this time very fine crushed limestone for another out & back. This was alongside a river and very pretty with the water, snow & hills. They had done a great job clearing the snow so apart from a couple of sections it was clear. I made the right decision to go with regular & not spiked shoes. Hammy started talking to me after m 7 so backed off. Tried to wind it back up for the last 3 but didn’t have much in the tank. Hammy is stiff & sore now, so clearly I still have problems in that department. A rethink of this years plans looks on the cards.
